Volunteers needed as BarnardoÂ’s opens biggest London store in Hounslow
Community-minded Hounslow residents are urged to step forward to help staff a new BarnardoÂ’s store that is the childrenÂ’s charityÂ’s largest in London.
Eager shoppers queued to browse the extensive racks of quality fashion, jewellery, accessories, gifts, childrenÂ’s clothes, toys, DVDs and bric-a-brac after the 3,000 square foot shop was opened by the Mayor of Hounslow, Cllr Sue Sampson, at the Blenheim Centre on Thursday, February 22.
It is the biggest of the 37 BarnardoÂ’s shops in London and the third to launch in the borough alongside smaller branches in Turnham Green Terrace, Chiswick, and Staines Road, Bedfont. All profits raised there will help to support the charityÂ’s work with vulnerable children, young people and families throughout the UK.
Volunteers of all ages are needed and people can choose to give as much time as they can spare, from as little as two hours each week. BarnardoÂ’s retail volunteers have the opportunity to learn customer service skills, operate the till, manage stock and create stylish window displays. Many of those who give their time enjoy how the role enables them to meet new people, build confidence and develop team-working and problem-solving abilities.
Cllr Sue Sampson, the Mayor of Hounslow, said: “I’m pleased to declare the new Barnardo’s store open. It looks fantastic and everything that’s on sale could be brand new. I’m impressed that the store is able to claim Gift Aid from the Government on donations and I’d encourage people to think about volunteering, as it’s a really worthwhile cause.”
Barnardo’s Area Business Manager Sian Jones said: “We’re really proud of our huge new store in the heart of Hounslow and we hope shoppers will come and visit us at the Blenheim Centre to have a look at all the fantastic clothes and goods we have on offer.
“Volunteers are a vital part of our operation so if you’re interested in finding out what volunteering might have to offer you, please drop into the store and have a chat with the team. The work you can do in store can be really rewarding in itself, and it has a real impact on the lives of the most vulnerable children, young people and families in the UK.”
The new storeÂ’s address is Unit 3, the Blenheim Centre, Prince Regent Road, Hounslow, TW3 1NL. It is open 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

London Borough of Hounslow and NSPCC celebrate a successful campaign to help keep children safe from sexual abuse
A year-long campaign to help Hounslow professionals, parents and carers talk to children about how to stay safe from sexual abuse concluded last week.
The campaign reached over 500 local professionals in the local area through the launch event, training sessions and presentations at forums. Over 1,000 parents met face-to face with NSPCC to learn how to keep their children safe from abuse. And over 6,000 children benefited from the delivery of PANTS in their classroom.
Over the year The London borough and Hounslow Safeguarding Children’s Board adopted the NSPCC’s highly successful ‘Underwear Rule’, known as PANTS, which has been welcomed by local professionals, parents and schools.
A hundred percent* of parents agreed or strongly agreed that they now know where to get information and advice about keeping their child safe from abuse. One hundred percent* also strongly agreed or agreed that they now felt confident about having conversations with their children about keeping safe from abuse.
Emma Motherwell, Local Campaigns Manager for the NSPCC said “We know that 1 in 20 children have been sexually abused, so PANTS is a vital tool to have important conversations with children at a young age, in simple age-appropriate way.
“Although this campaign has now ended there are still many resources readily available online for parents, including specially designed resources where English isn’t your first language or where children may have learning difficulties. Teachers can also download lesson plans which include slide presentations, curriculum links and much more.”
Councillor Tom Bruce, Cabinet Member for Education and Children’s Services, Hounslow Council, said: “We all have a part to play in keeping children and young people safe.
“This campaign has been well received in Hounslow and we will continue to support the PANTS rule as part of our wider safeguarding activities.
“We want to ensure the safety of all children and young people in the borough and that is why we have launched this campaign with the NSPCC so that people know what to do if they suspect sexual abuse and to speak out if they have any concerns.”
A PANTS WEEK of local activity will be held on the week commencing 24th September 2018.
If a resident has any concerns about a child, they should call the police on 999 if it is an emergency or 101 if an immediate response is not needed. They can also call the councilÂ’s childrenÂ’s services team on 020 8583 6600 or email earlyhelp@hounslow.gov.uk Or NSPCCÂ’s helpline on 0808 800 5000.

Feltham Arts are delighted to be delivering a two year Feltham Heritage project funded through the National Lottery, Heritage Lottery Fund. We are seeking to commission a theatre company, an illustrator, a web designer and a set designer.
Context
The aim of the programme is to increase engagement in heritage in the west of the Hounslow borough, by creating a package for local primary schools and provide the public with an annual Feltham History Day event. The project has been developed in partnership with both voluntary and statutory organisations.
The partners in the Feltham Heritage Project are: Feltham Arts Association (lead partner), Libraries, Feltham Local Studies, West Area Schools, and London Borough of Hounslow. The project will result in a range of innovative arts-led, heritage outputs including: A theatre piece; A series of schools’ workshops; A photographic exhibition; An illustrated map of the area with interactive elements; A physical resource pack for teachers, which will include archive material, worksheets, suggestions for activities and the illustrated map; An online resource and an annual Feltham History Day event.
A major element of the project is the creation of a historically accurate, engaging and entertaining theatre piece, which brings the heritage to life. The audiences for this piece will be diverse including school children, adults and families.
The chosen theatre company, will take a key role in researching, devising and performing this piece. The theatre company will also create and deliver a drama workshop to the schools taking part.
