Become a Volunteer Lock Keeper – one day a week between April and October
We are recruiting for Volunteer Lock Keepers to help us at Norwood Top Lock (Hanwell Flight of Locks) on Havelock Road, Southall. We are keen to recruit more people living locally and especially if you can volunteer on Thursdays or at the weekend. If you are aged 18+, enjoy being outdoors, meeting new people and learning new skills this could be for you. Full training and support is given to enable you to give a friendly welcome to waterway visitors, assist boaters through the locks and help keep the lock areas looking great. Full details and register here.
LetÂ’s Walk – Havelock Canal Walk – 11.30am – 12.30pm every Wednesday

Join us to help restore Jena (photos below). If you like practical tasks such as DIY, painting or sanding then please do come and help us get Jena back on the water again. We are also looking for a volunteer qualified electrician who could help us with installing some more power sockets on the boat. Full details and register here.
Coming Soon
We are awaiting planning permission for the new Canalside Community Garden – we will be recruiting volunteers to help us develop and maintain this garden once approved. We are also going to be planting trees and hedges in the first week of April  …more details to follow.
Southall Great Winter Canal Get Together Boat Trips Â
Despite the cold weather we had over 35 people join us on our boat trips along the Grand Union Canal. Everyone really enjoyed being on the water to view local wildlife and even take turns steering the canal boat.  Thank you to Hillingdon Narrowboat Association who provided the boat and the volunteers.
Jena – Floating Classroom & Volunteer Boat
Thank you to all our volunteers have been working throughout the recent months to renovate Canal & River Trust’s classroom boat. Jena had been out of action as her hull had been damaged by a bike which had been dumped in the canal. Once completed Jena will be a regular fixture in Southall for our volunteer events and also enable local schools to visit the canalside more often as Jena can be used as a canalside classroom. Jena will be fully accessible with a ramp and accessible toilet on board. If you would like to join us a Jena volunteer please sign up here.
Planting
The canalside green space alongside Glade Lane Canalside Park and next to the canalside gym has been prepared to plant wild flower seeds to create a wildflower meadow similar to Bixley Fields which was planted last year. Â A new rose hedge will shortly be planted within Havelock Green Space.
