Funding to help underrepresented groups to walk and cycle
TfL is making more than £500,000 available for community and not-for-profit groups to encourage people to walk and cycle.
‘Walking and Cycling Grants London’ aims to address barriers to active travel among traditionally underrepresented groups – helping to make London a ‘more sustainable, inclusive and healthy city’.
Previously known as Cycling Grants London, the 2019 programme has been expanded to include walking projects for the first time. Funding has been doubled to more than £500,000 – with the number of grants available also doubling from 30 to 60.
TfL hopes to award funding to at least one project in every London borough.
Each community project can apply for funding of up to £10,000 over three years through the programme.
Current and previous initiatives include cycle training, guided rides and courses teaching basic cycle maintenance. TfL says possible future projects may include guided walks, which encourage people to get active.
Will Norman, London’s walking and cycling commissioner, said: “I’m delighted that walking projects can now also benefit from our expanded grants, and I’m proud that we’ve doubled the funding available.
“By showing Londoners that walking and cycling are convenient, easy and fun ways to get around, we can improve their health and quality of life, as well as reducing toxic air pollution – improving our city for everyone.”
Miranda Leedham, head of customer marketing and behaviour change at TfL, said: “We’re pleased to be expanding this programme, which is targeting the barriers that can put people off getting active.
“We’ve seen more than 120 projects benefit from our Cycle Grants funding over the years and are looking forward to seeing even more Londoners of all ages and backgrounds get active with our increased funding.”
Earlier this month the London Borough of Hounslow received the 2019 London Road Safety Award for its success in reaching out to people and groups underrepresented in cycling – including women, people from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups, and disabled people.
Applications for Walking and Cycling Grants London are open until 16 September 2019. Click here to apply and view the different projects which are already running across London.
Team London Small Grants
This year Team London Small Grants will support volunteering projects that help people who are experiencing loneliness and social isolation. These Londoners are sometimes referred through social prescribing to small charities and voluntary sector organisations. The grants will help to develop the granteesÂ’ ability to engage sustainably with social prescribing.
Social problems such as loneliness, housing, employability and debt can affect both physical and mental health and well being. Around one in five visits to the GP are for non-clinical reasons. Social prescribing can help address these root causes and help patients improve their health.
Although social prescribing is currently available in many areas of London, provision is variable. The Mayor is seeking to support the growth of social prescribing through his London Health Inequalities Strategy. His ambition is to help more Londoners in vulnerable or deprived communities improve their health and well-being through social prescribing.
This yearÂ’s Team London Small Grants will fund projects that:
- Help people who are experiencing loneliness and social isolation, for whatever reason, who have been referred to a local voluntary sector organisation through social prescribing
- Support small organisations that are established and experienced in delivering support to their local community to help address loneliness and social isolation issues
- Support small organisations that are yet to connect to their local social prescribing networks or are already connected to social prescribing and will use the grant to add value to the work they are already doing
- Help to develop the organisationÂ’s capacity to engage sustainably with the social prescribing model and develop new ways of working
- Recruit and support volunteers to deliver the project
These small grants will provide a source of income for smaller organisations (annual turnover under £500,000) to meet local needs which may not meet the criteria for larger-scale funding.
Please read their Supporting Guidance Document for more information about the grants as well as guidance for questions within the application.

Deadline for applications is 13 September 2019.
They will be holding a market warming event on Thursday 1 August for small charities who are interested in applying. More detail here:
