Voluntary support workers required at the West London Family Court
Published on: 11 April 2017
Would you like to volunteer for the only charity in the UK dedicated to supporting people through the civil and family court process?
Would you like the opportunity to challenge yourself whilst making a difference to the lives of others?
The Personal Support Unit (PSU) is a charity supporting people who do not have professional legal representation in several courts across the UK. Due to government cuts to legal aid our services are in demand now more than ever.
Accordingly, we have opened a new service at the West London Family Court and are recruiting calm and practical individuals to join us – absolutely no legal background is required. You will be given training both prior to and throughout your time with the PSU.
Volunteers are trained to give assistance to people who, for various reasons, donÂ’t have lawyers but need practical and emotional support. You will need to be someone who can support a wide variety of people, has initiative, a common sense approach to help assist them solve their problem and the ability to comfort people going through a difficult time. You would be required to help with a variety of tasks such as: filling out forms, accompanying clients to their hearings and being a listening ear. You do not need any formal qualifications, but the ability to read and write English are essential.
Once you have registered your interest in this opportunity, you will be asked to attend an informal interview before you can begin training.
Training consists of 1 induction day and a minimum of 4 days shadowing experienced volunteers at both the Central Family Court in Holborn and the West London Family Court. We ask you to start shadowing within two weeks of the induction and complete your shadowing within a 2 month period.
Once you have completed shadowing, the minimum time commitment is at least 2 full days a month for around 1 year (or 20 full days over the academic year if you are a student).
The PSU service runs Tues – Thurs 9.15am-4.30pm at the West London Family Court so you will need to be available on at least one of these days (these are also the phone line opening hours).
