What is Safeguarding?
Safeguarding is the action that is taken to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm. Safeguarding means:
- protecting children from abuse and maltreatment
- preventing harm to children’s health or development
- ensuring children grow up with the provision of safe and effective care
- taking action to enable all children and young people to have the best outcomes.
Safeguarding children and child protection guidance and legislation applies to all children up to the age of 18. All organisations that come into contact with children should have safeguarding policies and procedures in place. This includes voluntary and community organisations, faith groups, private sector providers, as well as schools, hospitals and sports clubs. (NSPCC Definition)
Checklist for organisations:
NSPCC Learning has a checklist for you to use. This takes you through the NSPCC’s Safeguarding Standards and helps you check that you have everything in place. It can be used by any organisation that works with children and young people.
If at any time you become concerned that a child has been harmed or is at risk of harm – call Ealing Children’s Integrated Response Service (ECIRS) immediately on 020 8825 8000. You can also call ECIRS if you need advice or support for anything you have concerns about. Alternatively, you can call the NSPCC Helpline on 0808 800 5000 In an emergency, call the Police on 999
What is the Safeguarding Development Project
The Safeguarding Development Project is a dedicated project run by Ealing CVS, which promotes good safeguarding and child protection practice to voluntary, community, faith and private groups/organisations in the London Borough of Ealing. We do this by:
- Hosting the Ealing Safeguarding Forum (for information sharing and networking)
We are also able to work with organisations on an individual basis, assessing needs and working with groups to respond to these needs. Whether you want to learn more about safeguarding, develop a new safeguarding policy, train your staff, or access information about relevant developments and events, we are here to help!
